NPR speaks to Jishu Shi regarding the World Health Organization's concern towards an increasing epidemic of drug-resistant infections. This worry has called for stricter antibiotics use in pigs, chickens and cattle that are raised for their meat. 

An excerpt from the NPR article: 

"The greatest impact of the new guidelines, however, may be felt in countries like China, home to more than half of the world's pigs, where antibiotics have been used even more heavily than in the U.S.

"It's fair to say that they use more than the U.S., but I don't know how much more," says Jishu Shi, director of the U.S.-China Center for Animal Health at Kansas State University.

Shi says policies in China are changing, however. The Chinese government is starting to require that some antibiotics only be used in animals if prescribed by a veterinarian."

Animal Health in Chinese Economic Development

Jishu Shi, the keynote speaker at "The Role of Animal Health in Chinese Economic Development" symposium, gives his presentation to more than 100 people. The attendees included senior leaders of the top nine largest animal health companies in the world, China national managers and regulatory directors of multinational animal health companies, and senior leaders from China Institute of Veterinary Drug Control and Chinese animal health companies. The symposium was organized by HealthforAnimals - the Global Animal Medicines Association and held at the Grand Hyatt Beijing on October 17, 2017.
